It should have alarmed me when my optometrist saw a hint of cataract in my right eye. She referred me to an ophthalmologist, suggesting that I make an appointment as soon as possible.

It got me a bit worried, that’s all. I wear prescription glasses, true, but so do 74% of people in the UK as well. I can see clearly without my glasses.

As for reading without glasses — there’s the rub. The letters are unclear. I cannot read text without my glasses unless the letters are large.

But imagine how many gazillion people in the US wear reading glasses based on the value of this industry being US$14.91 billion in 2022. The forecast is for this figure to rise in 2030 to US$22.56 billion.

As for cataracts, they are very common. In the UK, it is estimated that people who are 65 years old and above have cataracts that impair the vision in one or both eyes.

But I definitely did not have any symptoms of cataract such as cloudy vision, faded colours, seeing double, halo around lights.

But, health referrals should not be ignored, especially as I might be a candidate for a possible RLE (refractive lens…
